here’s the second of two in today’s asian themed handrail.

this is an elaborate stone finial from an apparently very old chinese handrail. a finial is the decorative piece which rises above the handrail and is often found on newel posts. newel posts are the little half posts which help to break up a long span or secure the bottom of a staircase railing.

this is the first of two in today’s asian themed handrail.
this one comes from a train station, is stainless steel and has a wavy look to it. I like how the undulations follow the form of the steps. I bet it offers a better grip than traditionally angled railing.

the moment I saw this I knew immediately where it was. there is something incredibly fantastic about the detail in these buildings. everytime I would visit, I’d feel like the great gatsby, wishing for tuxedo tails and brandy snifters.
